PE
Physical Education (PE)
At Ramsden Infants School we recognise the importance PE plays in the curriculum and are committed to providing all children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education.
The aim of our PE programme is to develop children’s basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability and build the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity, team spirit and a healthy lifestyle. PE lessons encourage children to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills. These skills are embedded in the heart of our planning. Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the National Curriculum.
We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities which enable all children to succeed; to enjoy their learning; to be resilient and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times and achieve their potential and personal best.
We understand the importance PE, School Sport and Physical Activity has on children’s’ general health, fitness and mental wellbeing. We provide opportunities for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and we teach children the importance of leading healthy, active lives and making informed and appropriate lifestyle choices.
Our children have access to extra-curricular clubs e.g. fitness, gymnastics, multi-sports, healthy eating and outdoor games. A variety of specialist coaches, such as Yoga, gymnastics, cricket, karate, swimming and Multi-Sports, have enhanced our teachers’ knowledge and understanding of a range physical activities through the use of our Sports Premium funding.
Implementation
- PE at Ramsden Infants School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance and karate.
- The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
- Children participate in minimum of one PE lessons each week and encouraged to be physically for a least 30 minutes a day.
- The Long Term PE Curriculum Overview sets out the PE Units/Activities which are to be taught each half term throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
- We use and adapt a Scheme of Learning from iPEP to ensure planning, content and delivery is age appropriate. This scheme ensures lessons, year on year, are progressive
- The emphasis of our PE curriculum is inclusion for all children regardless of sporting ability. We provide suitable learning opportunities and access for all children, including those with SEND.
- SMART moves is used as an extra across the school to provide extra support for the children who need it.
- We promote both participation and competition through P.E and sport. We ensure all children experience competition at some level, individually or in a team, within lessons.
- Children participate in workshops/whole school events, sourced by School and delivered by Outside Providers, covering a variety of sports throughout the year. For example, gymnastics and karate, providing the children with an opportunity to experience new activities, learn new skills, improve their fitness and to try something new with a trained professional.
All pupils irrespective of gender, ability, ethnicity and social circumstance have access to the P.E. curriculum. All pupils are expected to participate in physical education lessons to the best of their abilities. Pupils will only be excused from P.E. when requested by a parent. Non participants will be given a task at the side of the hall.
Our dress code will be adapted for children with special needs and children whose religion or culture prescribes a different form of dress.
Wherever possible, needs will be met within the context of complete integration. However, the need to break down skills into small and achievable, progressive steps is recognised, as is the need to modify language, activities and equipment where necessary. Every opportunity will be taken to develop the pupils’ self-esteem and ability.
Health and Safety
Children will wear their P.E kit, consisting of shorts/tracksuit bottoms/leggings and a t-shirt with pumps/trainers or bare feet. They will change before and after P.E as independently as possible.
We keep spare P.E kit for those children who occasionally forget it is P.E. day.
All jewellery and watches will be removed before a lesson. Staff will not remove earrings. Where earrings haven’t been removed they will be taped and covered. Long hair will be tied back.
Equipment will be made safe for pupils to use and will be checked by an external company each year to ensure it is safe and useable.
All external providers and coaches will have to hold the required qualifications to deliver sessions in school and will hold a current DBS check.
Impact
At Ramsden Infants School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive and progressive and allows all children the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities. PE lessons are fun, enjoyable and challenging and all children can achieve, to the best of their ability, in a supportive, safe and stimulating environment. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise and activity for their physical and mental wellbeing.
We aim for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity, which hopefully becomes part of their future life outside of school. In PE, we also measure impact by:
- Regular learning walks
- Pupil questionnaires
- PE Premium spend analysis
- Analysis of participation at after school clubs
- We assess children using iPEP on their ability and effort, we use this to create a final end of term assessment report at the end of each area.
- Photo and video analysis of children’s practical work.
